Maus is the story of Art Spiegelman writing a story about his parents exprinece in Auswitch and Birkenau, through his father's perspective. It is an interesting story using animals to metaphorically express the ethnicity's of the characters in the story. Spieglman creates an interesting and beautiful first person account of one of the worst occurances in the exsistance of mankind.

"Pyongyang" is about Guy Delisle in Pyongyang working in animation. During his stay he succumbed to the way of life the Koreans live there. As he stays there, we the reader are taken through an eye opening journey into a completely different world. This is a country that is completely controlled and the people are told how, when, and where to be happy. It is a country that is obsessed with a leader that has been dead for years and a true picture can not be found. Every single picture of him is absolutely perfect. If you want to expose yourself to a completely different culture then this is the book for you. I enjoyed it, because I learned so much about a different way of life.

When I finished this book I was angry. I was angry because, these people in Gorazde were helpless and defensless and no one seemed to want to help them. Gorazde was suppose to be a safe zone, but the UN would not stay in long enough. The people that lived there were overrun and terrorized on a daily basis until the cease fire. To me, it would have been easy to just go and blow up the bad guys and save the people of Gorazde. But then again, I am a hopeless romantic. It was a very well written story, that was better than any history book. Athough, compared to other graphic novels, it was a slow read. Joe Sacco did an excellent job blending in the facts, but still keeping it interesting.

So we got done reading Persepolis, which is about this girl in Iran. I really liked this graphic novel becuase I did not know much about what it was like to live in Iran. I guess I kind of thought that everyone was the same over there and that everyone hated us. I guess that that is not the case. There are some people who like America and do not like the governement in Iran. It was a very good book. It was told from the view point of a child and it is very effective. I would recommend this book to anyone.

We have concluded our class discussions and the reading of watchman. I liked watchman. It was an interesting read, but it took longer than Batman. This book is about vigilantes trying to save the world. A typical comic book theme. But, this is different because unlike the superheroes of Marvel, these are normal every day people. The graphic novel is a lot different than the movie. In the book Ozymandias is the mastermind behind the destruction. He owns the pyramid shipping business, among others, and uses that has a cover for his diabolic plot. Ozymandias taints Moloch (the arch-enemy of our characters) and Dr. Manhattan's first girlfriend with cancer. Several people that were close with Dr. Manhatten were given cancer to discredit him and make him go away. At this point Dr. Manhatten is shacked up with Laurie who is a second generation vigilante. Dr. Manhatten goes off to mars and leaves earth. Laurie is confused and turns for comfort to fellow vigilante Daniel aka Niteowl. They start screwing each other and everyone is sucked into Ozymandias' plot to save the world through purification. Everyone ends up in Antartica and have a showdown with Ozymandias. Ozymandias wins and ironically averts a third world war nuclear decimation. His plan was to teleport a scientifically enginereed monster into New York, the act of teleportation of the monstor would be enough that would take out a third of the city. This unforseen horror will unite the world and all thoughts of war will subside. And it works.

Catch Up

This post is a few weeks late so I will catch you up on what we've done in class so far. We have read Batman: The Dark Knight. I liked this novel because it was the first one that I have ever read. I was surprised at how different it was from the cartoon that I grew up watching. The novel was much more adult. I did enjoy it though. When I started reading it I couldn't put it down! It was really good.
